Level 1 (Preliminary - Grade 4), Level 2 (Grade 5 - Certificate of Performance) and Level 3 (Associate - Licentiate diplomas).

 AMEB has released a new Oboe syllabus for use in examinations from 2018.

The new syllabus features two new grades: Preliminary and Certificate of Performance.


Alternative instruments may be used for the Oboe Syllabus, Level 2 and Level 3. Please refer to information in the syllabus regarding the use of cor angalis and oboe d'amore.

Grade Books

For the first time, AMEB has released a series of Grade Books (Oboe Series 1: Preliminary to Grade 4) to be used with Level 1 of the new Oboe Syllabus.

Series 1 grade books for Preliminary, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 4 can be purchased from the online shop as individual books, or in a limited edition Oboe Level 1 Teachers' Pack.

Technical Work

All technical work requirements for the new Oboe Syllabus are set out in Oboe Technical Work (2017),

which contains all the technical work and exercises for Preliminary to Grade 8.

From 2020, candidates will no longer be able to take exams using the old syllabus (or use the old Technical work book for exams).

Sight Reading

To accompany the new Oboe Syllabus, an Oboe Sight-reading book has been produced for the first time.

Oboe Sight-reading (2017) contains exercises suitable for preparing the Sight Reading for Oboe grades Preliminary to Grade 8.

Recorded Accompaniments

AMEB now offers Recorded Accompaniments for use in study and examinations in early grades. Where AMEB Recorded Accompaniments are available, candidates may perform with those recordings in examinations. These piano accompaniments have been recorded as practice tools and for use in early grade AMEB examinations. They feature performances of the accompaniment part for pieces in the corresponding AMEB grade books and can be used in conjunction with the MyTempo app as a practice resource. AMEB encourages candidates and teachers to rehearse and perform with live accompanists wherever this is possible. Learn more
