Our history
Over the past 100 years, AMEB has helped generations of performing arts students and teachers to reach their potential.
Our system of graded assessments and qualifications in music was originally launched in 1887. This quickly set the benchmark in Australia and beyond. Resources and examinations were then introduced for speech and drama as early as the 1920s. They’re still integral to our program today.
Most recently we’ve added an exciting range of modern creative qualifications to our curriculum. These include contemporary music, dance, music production and vlogging.
We’ve also embraced new technologies and developed new learning platforms over the years. In 2010 we became the world’s first examination board to launch online music theory exams. Our online learners are now located all over the world.
Every day we’re building on our proud history to create a bright future for performing arts education.

Our Owners
We’re fortunate to have owner representation across all states and territories in Australia.
This began when two forward-thinking universities – Melbourne and Adelaide – came together in 1887 to launch the initial program. They were soon joined by the University of Western Australia and the state government education departments of Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania.
As music education continued to grow in popularity, this group of six formed the Australian Music Examinations Board as a national body in 1918.
Today, AMEB continues to be jointly owned by these six stakeholders and we’re very grateful for their support.

Our partners
Collaborations are important to AMEB. We’re fortunate to work in partnership with a variety of organisations and individuals, and we’re very grateful for their support, dedication and expertise.
Our partners include:
- RSL Awards (Rockschool) – we’ve partnered with this UK based examination body to deliver contemporary music syllabuses and a range of other performing arts syllabuses in Australia and New Zealand. Through this partnership we’re able to offer exciting and diverse curriculum ranging from street dance and music theatre to creative qualifications such as vlogging and podcasting.
- The Yugambeh Aboriginal Elders and community – we’re honoured to be working with Dr Candace Kruger, Yugambeh Elder and Songwoman and Indigenous ethnomusicologist, and her community, particularly on the AMEB Online Orchestra in recent years.
- Music conservatories and academies in Vietnam – our offering of AMEB exams in Vietnam began in 2019, made possible by our important partnerships with some of Vietnam’s most trusted conservatories, schools and institutions.
- Music retailers, suppliers and performance spaces – we appreciate the partnerships we’ve formed with various organisations in support of our competitions, events and other projects.
